MJHS Choirs (Grades 7-8)
The Macomb Junior High Choir program is made up of the 7th Grade Choir, 8th Grade Choir, and a 7/8th grade Swing Choir.
7th and 8th grade choirs rehearse during the school day and perform at all major concerts throughout the year. These ensembles work on basic vocal technique, score reading through three and four-part music, performance skills and etiquette, and build confidence in their developing voice. Students in 7th and 8th grade choirs can participate in the ILMEA District four honor choir and various other honor choirs throughout the school year.
The Swing Choir is an auditioned ensemble of 7th-8th grade students that meets on Wednesday mornings from 7:00-7:35 am. This ensemble performs at most major concerts throughout the year and occasionally performs at in-school assemblies and community events.
6th Grade Choir
The Macomb 6th Grade Choir meets daily at Edison school at 8:00am. The choir is made up of nearly 95 students and performs in four major concerts throughout the year as well as in-school assemblies. In addition to their regular performances, members of the 6th grade choir have participated in WIU Opera Theatre’s production of Hansel and Gretel, District Four ILMEA Festivals, WIU Holliday Festival Children’s Choir and other community events.
6th Grade Choir focuses on ensemble singing in two and three parts. We work on basic vocal technique, body position, breathing, and score reading skills through out chosen seasonal repertoire and sight reading activities. Many of our 6th Grade Choir members also participate in 6th Grade Band and other musical activities in the community.
6th Grade Choir is a curricular part of the school day. Students are assigned grades based on daily participation, concert performances, and in-class assignments.
Edison Elementary Choir (Grades 4-5)
The Edison 4th/5th Grade Choir was started in 2018 and has grown quickly into a major extra-curricular performing ensemble. The choir meets Tuesday mornings before school from 7:00-7:35am and is made up of about 65 students. The 4th/5th grade choir performs at most of the major concerts throughout the year, as well as in-school assemblies.
Students who participate in the 4th/5th grade choir learn basic vocal technique, gain confidence in using their voice, and learn ensemble skills. We also practice our music reading skills through the chosen repertoire. This serves to enhance their overall music learning experience and is a great way to prepare for 6th grade choir and band and beyond!
This choir is fortunate to have assistant directors join us from the WIU School of Music. These assistant directors bring a myriad of new ideas and techniques to try with our choir. We are very thankful to work with them! This year, we are joined by Mr. Tyler Demaree and Ms. Allyson Wiacek, both undergraduate music education majors.
